The Pinetum has a fascinating history, built by interesting characters who collected conifers, wrote and Illustrated story books, and even started the Boy Scouts. The most important history, however, will be the one we share with our kids. Did you ever climb trees, build a fort, lose your shoe in a mud puddle? Did you have a favorite outdoor spot where you liked to think and dream? The Pinetum is the perfect spot to enjoy and explore the outdoors together!
“We have such a brief opportunity to pass on to our children our love for this Earth, and to tell our stories. These are the moments when the world is made whole.” -Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods
Our Nature Play Intentions
FUN – We provide simple nature-inspired activities. Explore and play with maps, challenges, and stories.
SAFETY – We provide a comfort station to help prepare and gear up with water, insect repellent, snacks, first aid. We also do a risk assessment prior to the event and do our best to mark poison ivy patches, help you with ID, and encourage tick safety.
EXPERTISE – Nature Play is a venue for “green guests” to promote local efforts in greenspace conservation and stewardship. To highlight our unique local environment, we promote the many organizations that work together in environmental education.
ENRICHMENT – Borrow a book, a tool for observation, or a lawn blanket for age-appropriate environmental literacy.
CONNECTION – What does Nature Play look like in your family and in your imagination? Hear and share stories, and help us as we try to build a sense of place in our greenspaces.
